Islamabad Regular tobacco smoking doubles the risk that people who have been successfully treated for TB will develop TB again — a condition known as ‘recurrent’ TB — informs a latest research study that provides new insight on the harmful links between tobacco and TB.
The study is the most robust-ever conducted into how smoking tobacco increases the risk of recurrent TB. It appears in the April issue of the ‘International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.’
According to a press release issued by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, the study has reinforced understanding of how harmful tobacco can be for people who have been successfully treated for TB. The risk of acquiring the disease for a second time increases in people, who resort to tobacco use. The study offers convincing evidence for public education. It also makes a call for governments to align their tobacco control policies with latest research.
