APROPOS the letter ‘Sheep disease’ (March 3), the government should take proper steps to protect livestock as it is a source of revenue.
There are only two veterinary colleges in Pakistan, one in Faisalabad and the other in Karachi. There are no proper medicines available for animals, and those which are available do not match international standards. The vaccines which should be kept under 20 C are damaged as they are not provided the required temperature. Even vaccinated animals are not safe.
Government hospitals for animals should be maintained and inspected on a regular basis. Usually veterinarians are not present in these hospitals and mostly medics treat animals and also charge fee.
The government has to take proper care of livestock.
